Parent Training: How You Can Accelerate Your Child's Progress
You are your child's most important teacher. Parent training in ABA isn't optional — it's the multiplier that makes everything else work faster.
Here is something that surprises most families when they start ABA therapy: the fastest predictor of a child's progress is not the number of therapy hours. It is how consistently the strategies are reinforced at home.
ABA therapy delivered by a skilled RBT for 20 hours a week is powerful. ABA therapy delivered by a skilled RBT for 20 hours a week plus a parent who carries the same strategies into the other 148 hours? That is transformational.
What Parent Training Actually Looks Like
Parent training at Courageous Hearts is not a lecture or a handout. It is hands-on coaching. Your BCBA works alongside you to show you how to implement ABA strategies during real, everyday moments — mealtimes, bath time, getting in the car, managing a meltdown at the grocery store.
Sessions are practical, judgment-free, and tailored to your family's specific situation. You will learn how to set up your environment to support your child's goals, how to respond to challenging behaviors in a way that reduces them over time, and how to reinforce the skills your child is working on in therapy.
Key Strategies You Will Learn
Every parent training program is individualized, but common skills include: how to use positive reinforcement effectively (the right timing, the right rewards, the right amount), how to implement prompting hierarchies and fade prompts over time, how to collect simple data on your child's behavior at home, and how to set up predictable routines that reduce anxiety and problem behavior.
You will also learn how to recognize and respond to early signs of escalation before behaviors become challenging — one of the most valuable things any parent of a child with autism can know.
The Emotional Side of Parent Training
We want to acknowledge something that does not always get said: parent training can bring up a lot of feelings. It can feel overwhelming. It can bring up guilt about interactions in the past. It can be emotionally exhausting to simultaneously be a parent and a student.
Our BCBAs hold space for all of that. We are not here to judge how you have been parenting. We are here to add tools to your toolbox and confidence to your stride. Every family we work with is doing something courageous just by showing up.
Getting Started
Parent training is built into every Courageous Hearts program — it is not an upsell or an optional extra. From your child's very first session, we are invested in making you a confident, capable partner in their growth.
